ITIL Exam Information and Description - An Overview

ITIL is a framework that provides guidance on identifying, planning, delivering and supporting IT Services to the business. Following the ITIL framework ensures that IT services are aligned to business requirements, enabling business to respond efficiently and effectively to the ever changing environment. ITIL has grown to become one of the most widely adopted IT Service Management Frameworks, which includes organisations like NASA, HSBC Bank and Disney who have successfully implemented ITIL. Modern day IT Departments are faced with the challenge of adopting a more customer orientated approach to IT Service Management and delivering high quality IT Services at a lower cost has become the standard. It is also critical that IT Services are aligned to business needs, actively support them and underpin the business processes. It is also becoming increasingly apparent that IT is the agent of change in many organizations and facilitates business transformation.

IT has become a critical part of the business and more often than not can be the failure of a business if not management correctly. Business depends heavily on the reliability and availability of IT service and major disruptions or outages can have devastating effects on, not only the bottom line, but reputational damage as well (BlackBerry being a prime example).

ITIL uses a Service Lifecycle approach in their framework and this is made up of the following Lifecycle components:

Service Strategy
Service Design
Service Transition
Service Operations
Continual Service Improvement

This lifecycle is a continual evolution that focuses on continual improvement of all the other lifecycles, resulting in an endless improvement process. These different components are dealt with in detail under the ITIL Expert section.

It is crucial to understand that ITIL is technology vendor agnostic and is focused on the principles of IT Service Management rather than the management of the particular technology itself (that is for architecture). ITIL has many complementary publications with COBIT and Prince2 having the most synergies. ITIL is made up of numerous processes with Change Management, Configuration Management, Problem Management and Incident Management being the most applied processes.

The ITIL Certifications are broken down into 2 key areas, ITIL Foundation and ITIL Expert followed by a practical (or experience related) ITIL Master certification which was released on the 1st May 2012. The ITIL Exams, which are written at the end of each module, can be done electronically or paper based at approved testing centres. To pass an ITIL Exam is one of the most rewarding exams to pass and shows competency in the IT Service Management (ITSM) field. The ITIL Expert certification follows a capability stream and a Lifecycle stream and these can be mixed and matched as long as a total of 22 credits are achieved to attain the ITIL Expert certification. The ITIL course can either be taken online or at an approved educational facility. To complete the Expert courses physical attendance is required but this can be supplemented by online courses. Most course material is supplied in an ITIL PDF format.

ITIL Jobs are fairly easy to come by and any company that has embraced ITIL is a company worth working for.
