A scrum master performs various duties that include overseeing and facilitating scrum work process.
He/she ensures better efficiency in product development projects.
The master must have a sense of authority and competency to maintain workload.
He/she must possess managerial skills and the potential to properly manage and schedule meetings.

The decision of appointing a master is a tricky one. It is a big responsibility for the senior management to bring on board a person who is reliable and competent enough to handle the job.
The master takes all the important decisions related to the product development strategy and manages all the meetings between the development team and the product owner. So, it becomes really essential for a team to hire someone that can work efficiently.

What happens when the scrum master is away? Since, he/she is solely responsible for ensuring that the development team is able to work without impediment, such a situation is bound to create some degree of anxiety.
However, there are several things to keep in mind. The first is that in this day of technological advancement, communication can be retained with the scrum master via phone or Internet.
If the he/she is to be unavailable otherwise, he/she has the option of appointing a temporary replacement. If that too is not possible, the development team shall have to rely upon its cross- functional expertise and management to work (despite any impediments that may arise).
